Mandatory Boating Equipment

Expert Article By: Kathryn Ali

The summer has finally arrived. This year, you are excited because you are going to buy your first motorized boat. But before you take off across the river or lake, whether it is for joyriding or fishing, there is a mandatory boating equipment list in the United States. If living in a different country, please check online for changes/additions to the following requirements.

The waterways are supervised by police and they will stop you to do a boat check. Best to be prepared!

Required Documents: Have your boat ownership registration papers and photo identification with you at all times, whenever you go out in a boat.

Life Jackets (Personal Floatation Devices): A life jacket is a jacket or belt that helps a person to float in the water and prevents a person from drowning.

Every person on a boat must wear a life jacket. They have to fit right and be the correct size. Children have got to wear a life jacket at all times. Never put an adult life jacket on a child.

If the boat is 16 feet and longer, then it requires having a minimum of one life-ring or floating cushion. If there is an emergency and someone is at risk of drowning, then the life ring is used.

Fire Extinguisher: All boats that have an engine and/or fuel tank in an enclosed compartment must have a fire extinguisher that does not have an expired date on it. If it has an expired date on it then it might not function properly in an emergency.

Emergency Signals and Noise Making Devices: All boats require functioning distress signals whether it is red flares, distress flags, or orange smoke. A good Horn or whistle is also needed. You can use a hand-held whistle for small boats but the larger boats need a horn that can be heard a good distance away.

Boat Lights: It is very important that the lights on your boat be put on properly according to size and class of your boat. These lights are a signal to other boat operators as to whether your boat is anchored, sailing or motorized.

Green Light- shows directly in front to 112.5 degrees down the right side (known as starboard) of the boat.

Red Light- shows directly in front to 112.5 degrees down the left side (known as port side) of the boat.

White Masthead Light- shows in the whole 225 degrees that is covered by the total area of both of the Green and the Red lights together.

White Stern Light- shows at the back of the boat to 67.5 degrees on both sides of the stern. This gives a total area of 135 degrees..

To avoid really nasty fines from the authorities, ensure that you always do a check of all the required equipment. Before taking off in your boat, make sure that everything is doing what it is suppose to do.

Open Question: Why didn't Jesus get a job like everybody else?

His father was a carpenter. Jesus could have done skilled work like Joseph, and made a good income for his family instead of becoming a preacher... of something. We're still trying to figure out what he preached. Jesus could have got a job fishing like Peter did. He had lots of contacts among skilled workers, apparently. Jesus could have got an education in Sepphoris, a Greco-Roman city, if he had a love of foreigners. He had so many options, and such a bright future, which he wasted for no reason. Why did he do it? Christians, what do you think?

Open Question: A good pet for me and how to convince Mom and Dad?

I'm a thirteen year old girl. I'm allergic to cats. I've only ever taken care of a fish (I've had 3 betta fish; at seperate times). I consider myself responsible, especially compared to people I know who are the same age as me. Even older. Haha so anyway, I've always loved animals and my stubborn parents know I do; they just won't let me get a pet. I've considered: goldfish, another betta fish, gerbils, hamsters, budgies, dogs, Siberian cats, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits; meaning I already know a lot about them. I personally think my best bets would either be betta, hamster, budgie, and gerbils. Here's the problem: My dad used to live in the city so he's seen big city rats and he thinks they're the same thing as pet rodents: filthy and disease-bearing. I've told him otherwise but he doesn't listen. I said that hamsters and gerbils would be a good possibility because they're small and can be kept in my room (I'm a heavy sleeper; wheels won't bother me). However, I can't really convince him! Another problem is my mom. She used to have budgies when she was younger and she doesn't want me to get one because she thinks they're too messy. Sad part is I believe her because she's owned one. She got kinda mad at me for asking again and said "fine, have one; but you better be prepared to have to vacuum your room everyday." Which is okay with me ;) Haha. Goldfish are too messy, so betta fish would be a good pet. Well, after a while they get boring. which is a problem. I don't want to do that to another fish, you know? Hmm... That's probably the only thing they wouldn't mind me getting. I already told them but they didn't totally say yes yet. What should I do? My options at this point are a budgie, pair of gerbils, Syrian hamster, or another male betta. Thanks! :) Sorry this is so long

Open Question: What approach to take with a fussy eater?

I have a 3.5 year old boy who has a healthy appetite, but is very selective with what he wants to eat. I am reaching the point where I don't know what approach to take with him and how this will affect him later on in life. Every day he will ask me for specific things, like chicken nuggets, fish fingers, coleslaw, peas and corn. This is his idea of a perfect meal. I have no problem giving him fish fingers and chicken nuggets every now and again, but not every mealtime. What is very upsetting for me is that I spend such a lot of time in the kitchen making nice things for the family, feeling really excited about the meal and then he outright refuses to eat it. As a baby, I never gave him jars of food, except when out and about. It was always Annabel Karmel, home cooked meals. I always offered the things that he initially turned down in the hope that he would someday try them. Now that he is older, I have started threatening to take all treats away and have also started saying:if you take 4 more bites then you can have desert. I know these things are wrong, but I dont know what else to do. I'm at my wits end. I get very nervous when I start preparing a meal and when we go out. He will refuse the food I make and then ask me for bread. What do I do in this situation? Surely this is giving in to him and he will continue to do this as he gets older. He is a very smart and advanced boy for his age, so he knows exactly what he is doing, I just don't know how to fix it. Sorry for the essay....thanks in advance

Open Question: Is it alright to leave a dog in the car in winter?

I'm a college student and their is this neat walking trail near my school I wanted to try out..their is also a mountain that you can hike and a huge lake near the school too. I was thinking after class I could just go instead of driving home first, but would it be alright to leave my dog in the car for one 50 minute class? Its been in the 30s-40s this week. I could leave the window cracked a little if the sun was out....my dog hates the heat/sun haha he overheats in the house but never gets too cold outside. I have only left him for short time periods like running in to eat before fishing for 30ish minutes. Just curious what you think. I'd never leave my dog in the car during class in the summer thats a for sure no but in the winter....I think he would be fine but just want your opinion. He is a Golden Retriever.

Open Question: What Size Fish Tank Condensation Tray Should I Get And From Where?

I have recently purchased a tank with the measurements of 37x46x25cm The top of the tanks' corners each have some angle things with holes in, supposedly where a hood/tray should be screwed in? Any idea from where online I can get these from? I already have a light etc. All I need is a condensation tray. Would this be ok? (If so, which size, also, I always thought condensation trays where meant to be transparent, this one seemes not?) http://www.petsathome.com/shop/aquarium-condensation-tray-various-sizes-by-algarde-30325 Thanks!

Open Question: How to create a biosphere?

I wanted to create 2 different biosperes. One freshwater and one saltwater. For this I want to go to my local pond and my local beach and collect all of the stuff that I need to create this. I need some siggestions for the types of stuff that I could put in the saltwater one and the freshwater like the types of animals like snails and fish. For the saltwater one I was wondering if you could put baby clams in there because they are filter eaters and eat plankton. If I were to put clams in there, what type of plant would I need to sustain the plankton? Give me a lust of stuff that I will need for each of these BIOSPHERES Saltwater AND freshwater Thankyou for the help :) Could someone just tell me because I read both of those and they didn't help but thank you!
