Why so insensitive to flood victims?; Efforts were too little or too late The flood of '97 leaves us with many memories. Memories of the '93 Cryptosporidium onslaught that the municipal water department said could never happen. Memories of the heat wave of '95 that killed more than 25 residents of our city, many of whom were neglected by our health department and ill-informed by city employees as to the danger of heat exposure. And now the flood. The police moved along Sherman Blvd. too late. We already had 2 feet of water in the basement coming from the sewer drain, 6 feet on Sherman Blvd., and 4 feet on the front lawn because the storm sewers were blocked, having been neglected. There is hope. We'll get some aid from the much maligned federal government. From Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist, we got an off-pitch rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes" on the Fourth of July while flood victims discarded their blue suede shoes caked with city sewage. Bet your wading boots that come mayoral election next, voters will be singing: "John Norquist's political future lies a molding in the grave, molding in the grave . . . " Roger Boesch Milwaukee; Columnist helped us see big picture I just wanted to say how much I appreciated Eugene Kane's column on July 13 in regard to welfare recipients vs. flood victims. I have cut it out, as it's a keeper. Thank you, Mr. Kane, for having the courage to be so honest in showing us the bigger picture. Your column spoke volumes. My only comment would be that flood victims have my heartfelt sympathy and are entitled to the help of our government. Thank God for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Perhaps some conservative eyes will be opened and more understanding will be realized with the saying, "Walk a mile in my shoes." Sharon Suettinger Two Rivers
I am stunned by Diane Fabian's insensitive remarks (The Morning Mail, July 10) about how flood victims should not accept federal aid. Local radio shout-show hosts, are you listening? Fabian states that "property owners have a responsibility to purchase adequate insurance. If they fail to do so,

Wet wading a joyful experience tempered by tainted-water risk
Wet wading is wonderful. A walk on the wild side. It is more of a pure form of fishing Jay Angel said. The first muskie I caught while wading the Flambeau River. Right then I was hooked on it Ken Gortowski, the Fox River wading guide, vehemently disagrees. To him, wet wading in Illinois waters is
